冯根生教授、博导，1981年毕业于中国杭州大学生物学系，1982年－1984年就读于第二军医大学，获免疫学硕士，1990年获印第安那大学分子生物学博士学位。现任加州Burnham研究所教授，兼加州大学圣地亚哥分校病理系教授，2006年聘为厦门大学生物医学研究院兼职教授，同年评为博士生导师。
研究方向为探讨糖尿病与肥胖症的分子机理及新型药物的开发，得到美国国立卫生研究院（NIH）的支持。先后获得11项研究基金，共计500万美元。
1999年获中国国家杰出青年科学基金。先后在Science、Nature Medicine、PNAS、EMBO J. 等国际著名学术刊物发表了60多篇文章，并应邀为Trends In Genetics写综述充分证明他在其所在领域中的学术地位。担任Nature Cell Biology等十个国际著名学术刊物的Reviewer。
应邀做过七十多个学术报告，并为美国、欧洲、香港的八个基金机构包括美国国立卫生研究院、美国心脏学会、美国癌症学会等担任评审人，同时被浙江大学聘为“光彪”讲座教授。冯根生博士在细胞信号传导及糖尿病与肥胖症的机理研究方面做出了世界领先的突出贡献，被吴瑞先生列为1949年以来对生物化学领域做出突出贡献的84位旅美华人科学家之一。
